Everything that Caroline Gill writes is extremely emotionally charged, so consider yourself warned. If you're looking for a light read that you can share with your grandma, this may not be the best choice. However, if you're looking for something woven from a passionate love of word imagery that pulls you into another world and makes you a part of the story, this is your book. For her first foray into the vampire world, she nailed a unique take on the somewhat abused genre. There is definitely more than meets the eye with Valen, the main character, and the other mysterious character leaves so much room for more in book 2. I'm absolute enthralled with Gill's writing style and will be a loyal fan to her ingenious view of the world and the possibilities that are always around us.

A wonderful start to a new series...

Valen is a broken man. He's still recovering from the loss of his father/hunting partner, and he's just now getting back into the fight... Hunting vampires alone is a dangerous business, but with fewer hunters available, he feels that he must keep on. He was trained by the best, his father... And vengeance is all he has left!
Shesha is not quite human. In fact she doesn't even care for humans, but for reasons of her own, she is also hunting; casting a strange golden light when she takes the heart of a Vampire...
It is not surprising that Valen and Shesha's paths cross; it's not exactly fireworks, as they both have the same goal, but it is interesting!
Valen's story is totally transparent. We see everything. His pain, his angst, his joy when even one innocent is saved, his confusion when he sees a golden light while hunting. At the beginning of the book Valen's life is shown like a series of snapshots, of hunts, a monotony, a way of life. Shesha on the other hand is shrouded in mystery and often cloaked in invisibility. We know of her, but not what motivates her. We know that when it comes to Valen, even she is unsure of her motivation.
...And just who is Adelinde, the woman that has stolen Valen's heart? Get the book and find the answers... But, only the ones that Caroline Gill is willing to share.
